Tai Chi Moving To A New Time

Tai Chi on the Beach is a success, but way too early for those of us on SL time and not good for those on the East Coast. Some of our EU folks have asked for evening classes. So, we're changing our Tai Chi class to 11am SLT beginning 6 Jan 2012.

While our New York friends will grumble it allows folks in Hawaii to join us, too. Hey East Coasters give me a time and day that's best for ya.

Virtual Worlds and Real Life Impact for Fitness & Weight Loss

You read it right ... Research is showing that joining a virtual gym increases your success at continuing with real world workouts. Their research also showed that those participating in a peer support group on weight loss lost just as much weight as those who only dieted in real life. No wonder the weight watchers website is so successful!

Second Life was featured in a series of articles on virtual weightloss. Links for articles from the BBC News, Forbes, and others are posted on the Second Life website (http://secondlife.com/news/). Scroll down to June 2011 for some of the articles or google it (second life and weight loss).

What does this mean for Etopia? We already have food information available at the Farmer's market and we'll continue to add more resources. We're building a food cooperative demo at Etopia Plaza that will showcase good eating and food choices as well as info about food cooperatives.

To celebrate the continued bridging of SL and RL we're launching Tai Chi on the Beach. Tai Chi on the Beach will begin December 2nd and run every Friday morning at 7:30am SLT. This is our opportunity to support each other through conversation and sharing of experiences. We'll also share detailed information about tai chi and tips to maintaining well-being. You can also come down to the beach on your own and learn a little more about the benefits of fitness.

Snooter-doots - an eco-sustainable gift of choice

Good business is not only profitable, it's fun. I recently ran across a great website that creates art-dolls keeping the environment in mind and the prices reasonable. There's a lesson here...

They even make a geoduck named Georgie. Cuter than his real-life model for sure.

what happened to the mall?

Curiosity is growing among residents and visitors alike. The question on everyone's mind is "what's happening to the beach?"

The mall that occupied the southeast corner of Etopia Prime was aged and heavy on prim. Our initial idea was to upgrade the mall, but soon found it difficult and counterproductive so we scrapped that idea and began work on designs for a mixed use community that was fun with a touch of coastal romance, and of course reflective of the vision and mission of Etopia.

The land is terraformed to rise from what will be a landing point for Etopia Prime to the ridge overlooking the waterfall. Along the banks will be shops, homes, cafes, plazas, and cart vendors. At least we hope we'll have the room for all of it.

Hello. My name is Tara Lopes and in Second Life I am Throughthesewalls Moody. In both lives I am the owner and president of MUSIC NOT POLITICS, Inc. a music management and promotion company. Together with Etopia we hope to bring good times, great music and awareness to the Etopia concept and so much more. setting a green stage for kids

For many years I worked with underserved youth in arts and technology. I've preached that if you want audiences tomorrow engage kids today. The Alliance for Climate Education is working the high school scene educating and engaging students on issues of global warming. They hold free multimedia assemblies in schools across the country. I'm not saying book a presentation. I'm asking everyone to share their environmental, community, and sustainable work, ideas, and builds to Etopia. vision for a new economy

David Korten is one of my favorite visionaries. He posted a direct call to action piece on his blog yesterday. In it he says we have yet to have a much needed conversation about the 2008 Wall Street debacle. He calls for a meaningful conversation that goes beyond finger-pointing. Here's part of what he said.

"We have yet to engage in a much-needed national conversation that addresses essential, yet unasked, questions. For example:

Do Wall Street institutions do anything so vital for the national interest as to justify opening the national purse strings and showering them with trillions of dollars in order to save them from the consequences of their own excess?
Is it possible that the whole Wall Street edifice is built on an illusion that has no substance yet carries deadly economic, social, and environmental consequences for the larger society?
Might there be other ways to provide necessary and beneficial financial services with greater effectiveness and at less cost?"

End of Year Admin

We'd like to take a moment to say Happy Holidays and to update you on changes in our event schedule.

The following activities will not be held until after the new year...

The drumming circle will be quiet for the next couple of weeks. We're letting the trees rest from all of their fall activity.

The Friiisday Bored Meeting will not convene until the Friday after New Year's. Seems everyone is already planning to be stuffed from Christmas dinner and unable to join us at Tsidel's until after the drowsiness wears off.

The Thursday Parties at the Pavilion are also on hold until mid January. We'll all have to dance in our livingrooms until Aquiel is able to spin the platters once more.

Celebrating Winter & The Holidays

We're experiencing something different on Etopia this year. Snow. The weather conditions are just right to cap our mountains in snow and throw some frost across the islands. Our beaches, though, are still sandy and sunny.

Everyone is getting into the holiday spirit and we're coming alive with just enough of a festive feel to make this that special time of year we all remember as kids.

Our community holiday party is Thursday, December 16 at 6:00pm at the Pavilion. Residents & Friends of Etopia are invited to celebrate the season and get your groove on (dancing only folks... we're a G sim afterall) to the sounds of our very own DJ Aquiel Aero. There will be gifts and plenty of fun.

Etopia's Training Center - Open & Ready to Rock

The Etopia Training Center is now open and ready for your next workshop, webinar, collaborative group project, presentation, sales pitch, or next training event. Three floors of meeting and collaboration space in the warehouse on the plaza. Easy access from the tram or gondola and in walking distance from the main landing point.

When you walk into the building you'll immediatiely notice an Interactive WebTV and Presentation Viewer.

The viewer is 95% web-driven, not tied to parcel ownership, and is completely interactive. Stream a webinar from your website, use the whiteboard for collaborative work, show a movie, teach a class, and more.

Next to the viewer is a poster with a set of instructions. If you need additional assistance contact Bree Silent or Namaara MacMoragh.

We've installed the perfect seating for your event participants. The seats in front of the viewer allow users to raise their hand during presentations. Great for asking questions. You should be able to copy additional seats if you need them. We ask that you return the seating number to 15 or less when you are finished with your event. The additional seating areas in the back of the room are for small discussions and relaxing.

The second floor has been set up for group conferences, discussions, client meetings, club meetings, support group meetings, conferences of just about any kind can be held here. Funky colors and low lag make this spot fun and effective for small workgroups.

And when you're ready for a break there's a coffee shop on the roof. Need I say more? This coffee shop is set up for casual conversation in a relaxed setting overlooking Etopia Island. It's interactive with coffee, tea or ice cream sodas.

This week we are showcasing the eclectic stylings of Moondoggirl. Moondoggirl Moomintoog cut her teeth on folk, lost her innocence to rock, grooved on jazz, and now has come of age with country. This RL songwriter walks the walk with some of the great songwriters of country music today. She performs in Nashville, and has had some of her songs on hold being considered for cuts by some well known country artists. Come hear songs that will move, groove and bruise you!

SL performer since February of 2008, MOON is a Minneapolis/Nashville songwriter that bridges the musical gap between genres with her own original songs and covers. From Lucinda Williams to Nina Simone, Sheryl Crow and Bonnie Raitt, Shelby Lynne and Colbie Callait, to the Beatles and Bob Dylan, her strong vocals, unique originals and covers will move, groove, soothe and bruise you with her own brand of edgy "country-blues," style.

If you ask Moon who her influences are, you will be surprised to learn she has a love for most genres of music, and they all come through in her writing. Sustainable Living Library has a new exhibit!

The Sustainable Living Library has a new exhibit to raise awareness about the signs and systems of heart attacks, strokes, and common medical terminology. There are three interactive quizzes designed by a medical librarian and clinical advisory team. This is part of a real life research project to determine the effectiveness of gaming on consumer health, health care behavior, and decisions.

The exhibit is located on the library's front deck. While you're at the library be sure to see the Earth Day Exhibit on Water Resources created by real lif graduate library student Alliejnv Listern.

Etopia Photo Contest

We're celebrating the wonders and community of Etopia with a photo contest. Contestants may submit any photo on any theme and no limits on how many photos you enter. BUT please remember Etopia is a PG sim, so no adult content. The only requirement is that the photo must be taken in Etopia or Etopia Prime. Judging will be on the basis of creativity and artistry.

First Prize -- $1000L
Second Prize -- $500L
Third Prize -- $250L

Veterans' Opinions on Clean Energy

An interesting post on Greenbang caught my attention this morning. "A new poll conducted for VoteVets.org, an organisation of recent veterans that aims to be “the voice of the 21st century patriot,” finds that 73 per cent of veterans from the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan want the US Congress to pass a new law in favour of fighting climate change and shifting to clean energy sources. A full 67 per cent also believe such legislation would help their own economic prospects."

Etopia's Large Wind Turbine

The Sustainable Energy Science Lab announces today that it has completed a year-long analysis of the economic viability of Etopia's "Big Turbine," a facsimile of a Vestas V-52, built by Bjerkel Eerie before I was born...let's say, more properly, November 9, 2007. In short, the turbine will pay for itself in 5 more years, easily within the maintenance contract of 15 years. Details of the analysis are given in the attached notecard, and anyone can learn more about the project at our lab, on Etopia Island.

Going forward our events calendar will be a Google Calendar that I will link to this page. Each host or event sponsor will be entering their own events, so be sure to check back often to see what has been added or changed! Just a reminder that all hosts and event sponsors will be responsible for adding their own event info to the google calendar, the SL events listings and for sending out Etopia Group notices. We will no longer have an event manager for these tasks since the job has just gotten too large for one person to handle. With everyone pitching in the promote their own events, it will spread out the load...Thanks!

There are lots of changes to Etopia in response to resident and visitor feedback. We have created a Pavilion in the middle of Etopia Village for events, discussions and gatherings. All residents are welcome to host events here at no charge.

We have also created a new theatre on the lowest level of the Prime Train Station and will be showing weekly movies in the "E-Max" theatre there. There is room for some dancing and socializing as well in a fun atmostphere. The Arcade is there and Tsidels' Cafe is up above making this a wonderful new entertainment venue.

We been making land parcels for sale on both sims to folks who would like to own on Etopia. These land sales have gone extremely well and are serving to allow more residents to own and contribute to Etopia at a higher level than ever before! Some lots are residential, some are commercial and some are for both. If you see an area that interests you but it is not for sale, please contact jojogirl Bailey for information about whether or not that parcel is available. We have not set all the available land for sale, but continue to do it gradually and as time permits. Please be sure to check the Prime Beach area and the Clocktower area for any new plots set for sale.

We are also adding some slighly larger cottages over on Prime Beach. Some folks have requested a larger space and we have found the perfect home! Stop by and check them out and see if one of the locations in the perfect home for you!

Bells Are Ringing on Etopia

Over this past weekend, Etopia was the location for a very beautiful partnership ceremony and celebration. The lucky couple actually met on Etopia many months ago and over time, learned that they would become more than just friends. The drum circle was moved aside and a beautiful wedding stage was built. It might become a more permament spot in the middle of our Old Growth forest.

Actually I hope that Etopia becomes the choice destination for many loving couples.

A Life of Its Own

I was walking around Etopia last night and noticed the incredible abundance of things which have been created by community residents. It is so exciting to have initated Etopia Island, and then stand back and watch to see what the residents do within the environment.

It is extremely satisfying to see displays, events and other creative projects come into being on an ongoing basis. For example one resident Luchpur, has just completed building a High Performance Sustainable Home which will have its grand opening this coming weekend. He has even commissioned an in-world Machinima maker to create a walking tour of the home that will be running as part of the Grand Opening.
